Hi Guys
Just a quick email to thank you both very much for an extremely
enjoyable weekend. From a personal point of view it was especially
great, as not only have I now got a pair of flippers that I actually
find comfortable, but on Saturday afternoon, at Tolcarne, for the
first time, as far as I can recall, I managed to get out back as well,
although it must be admitted that the waves at that time were fairly
'docile'. In addition, thanks to you, Rob, I even rode a wave from
out back to the shore, nearly mowing down Aidan and one of the other
students in the process, as I couldn't find where the brakes were
located on my bodyboard!!! Seriously, though, I am extremely grateful
to you both, especially bearing in mind that I am very slow at picking
up the principles of bodyboarding, so must be a nightmare to teach.
However, I do want to get better, because I really enjoy bodyboarding.
thanks David Gallico |

Just wanted to say a massive thank you for all the time and effort you put into me this weekend. Am back in work sat at my desk thinking about the excellent weekend I have had. I got home just before 10 last night really exhausted. This morning my body has stopped working, calf muscles no longer work and arms cannot be lifted.
I definately feel I learnt a lot and I hope i get the opportunity to keep practicing everything you all showed me.
Excellent tuition, feeling I can now hold board properly, duck dive better and generally know what I should be doing. Would definitely consider repeating the exercise. Thanks for an excellent time.
Once again thanks so so much
Yours

Hi Rob & Aidan,
Thanks again for an absolutely superb weekend.
Apologies for blitzing you with questions. it is just that we are totally into body boarding!
As promised, a short testimonial for you to use if needed:
"Warm welcome, waves and sunny weather provided us with an absolutely brilliant time at the body boarding weekend. Rob, Aidan, Brendan and crew really make the weekend worthwhile.
Loads of things happening that are really fun. Such as beach coaching, video analysis and even a BBQ at a beach restaurant. Awesome! The highlight is having guys who are so enthusiastic about their sport being able to not only share vast knowledge, but actually in the water SHOWING how it is done!
Been on other sporting weekends where the coaches have the gear but no idea! This body boarding weekend is different. The boys really know what they are doing, and make it easy to learn.
Going to do it again soon - Many thanks Boys.

Bodyboard Coaching week, May 2009.
Rob, Brendan and Aidan,
We`ve arrived back safe and sound,
We would like to thank you all for an excellent week of coaching between the 4 - 8 May 09. All the lads who attended your coaching course have thoroughly enjoyed their time with you and the guys. The instruction was excellent and service and support throughout the week was to highest standards.
We are now back to work and the work place is buzzing with stories of our exploits both in and out of the water! All those who participated are now confident enough to venture up to Portrush and tackle some big ones soon. We`re all missing the TOLCARNE WEDGE very much!!!
We hope to make plans for another training week after the summer and now hope to book a winter session soon after- Morocco is still our favourite choice.
Once again Rob a big thank you to you and the guys and see you very soon.
Regards
John and the Crew

Rich Hall's (The British Bodyboard Club's Chairman) testimonial of September 2005's Bodyboard Coaching Weekend.
I’ve been bodyboarding on and off since I was a teenager spending my summer holidays working at my relatives’ B&B in St Ives. It’s only in the last few years though that the sport has captured my imagination again.
Successive Spring holidays in Brittany had reminded me about what I’d been missing, and prompted me to invest in a new NMD board (thanks to Dave Heard @ BBHQ) and decent fins, as well as subscribing to ThreeSixty magazine again. In this I’d spotted the advert for Rob Barber’s Sola sponsored bodyboard weekend.
Most of the participants on this June’s course were staying at the famous Cribber Green Rooms, home of Rob’s bodyboard school; but late booking meant that I was lodging at another surfer’s haunt the Miramarr. A strictly no fuss take-us-as-you-find-us place, catering for backpackers and surfers. £12.50 a night including a DIY breakfast was a real bargain, especially if you’re more concerned about the quality of the surf rather than the decor.
Saturday morning saw the 15 participants gathered on the decking at the CGR along with coaches Rob and Aiden Salmon in glorious sunshine. Rob had picked the best weekend of the early Summer season to date, both for the weather and the surf, with 3-4 feet of clean surf and a light offshore breeze providing excellent conditions.
Suited up, the session started with the group being split into novice and intermediate on Towan beach for some introductory schooling. After finding out what we were looking for in the weekend the intermediates worked on warm-ups, duck diving and trimming and then moved on to a basic roll. After a couple of my usual miss-cues I was well chuffed to properly land a roll for the first time. Not bad for an aging 30 something.
After lunch back at CBR we moved onto Fistral in the afternoon, where conditions proved to be more challenging. A more rigorous paddle out tested the duck-diving skills honed in the morning and we were rewarded with a wedgy left hander that just would not quit. Rob and Aiden were out with us all, giving pointers and practical hints that were helping to improve our technique; whilst making the most of the conditions themselves.
We retired to the National Surf Centre for some video analysis of our afternoon’s performance and then settled down for a couple of cold beers at the CBR. A trawl through the Newquay bars and clubs ensued and we were introduced to a number of local Newquay bodyboarders, including current UK champ Joe Franklin. An excellent night finishing in Sailors nightclub (I think!)
Sunday dawned with a decidedly foggier out-look (and I’m not just talking about my head) the lifeguards closing the beaches until 11. Aiden took us through the fundamentals of drop-knee in the morning session and Rob had us working on spins and rolls on Fistral in the afternoon followed by more video analysis.
Altogether an excellent weekend, aided in no small part by the conditions and excellent coaches. I think we all took strides forward, improving our technique in key areas. I left Newquay knackered but stoked, using the 200-mile trip home to plot the next surf trip.

Martin Goff's Testimonial about the May 2008 Bodyboard Coaching Weekend
Hi Rob
Just wanted to drop you a quick note to say thanks for a really fun weekend – shame it went so quickly! Jilly and I had loads of talking to do on the way back, with plenty of analysis thrown in as to how it all went. In some ways it was kind of frustrating at first seeing all the other guys catching waves and trimming so well, as well as getting out back rather more easily than I did at first ;o)
In the end though there was a realisation that they have probably been doing it rather longer than me, and when I sat down and thought about it I really learned a heck of a lot in a short space of time. I shall now be working on my board positioning over the summer, as it was quite clear that is such an important area. On Sunday I was finding it a heck of a lot easier to get past the white stuff too – so perhaps my technique was improving a bit (or maybe I was trying to kid myself there was no rip helping!) I now have the confidence to go for those waves that I wouldn’t have thought about before the weekend, and know that I am able to ride them and that everything will improve with practice. I’m really glad we made it to that break in Perranporth as well - I shall look forward to being there again in July.
I’m going to try and get down for a one day session at some time if I can organise the time off – do you do them on weekdays as well? I also told Jilly I’d love to do one of the overseas trips – but was told quite categorically that would have to wait until after I have recovered from my hip operations later in the year!!!
Thanks for the encouragement – I’m certain I am going to benefit through the summer. I must have taken something in, because on the Sunday I kind of began to figure out that I didn’t have the board flat enough as I was paddling to catch the waves (check out photo 10 where I am front right – how high up is the nose!), which was probably why they were dumping me off the back so often. Once I started to try and feel like I was pushing the nose down a bit things definitely started improving. Before the weekend I’d have just started getting frustrated and probably given up because I just wasn’t getting anywhere. On looking at the photos, I’ve also realised that I need to try and arch my back a bit better when trimming, again to keep the board into the wave as well as possible. I think about the only photo I am riding a wave in was number 27 – but it was really useful to see because it looks like my right arm isn’t far enough back on the rail, and I am kind of laying too flat (if that makes sense?)
I’m pretty sure I’m on the mailing list already, and having had a look earlier I’m thinking about maybe coming along on the July 5th weekend. Have to check with the significant other first though!! You never know, I may be able to convince her to have some lessons too.
All the best, look forward to catching up again later in the year.

Morning Rob,
Back to reality for me, the car nearly pulled towards the M5 this morning, very tempting!!!
Thanks again for a great weekend; it was the best I’ve done so far! I think the smaller group, going to different places trying different waves and the video analysis was invaluable, a picture paints a thousand words and all that. I think people will get the most from the video and the tips you give when watching it back!!
Thanks again mate, top weekend!!!
Warm regards
Pete

Date of Trip/s and Courses attended; Sept 2006 (Weekend), December 2006 (Lanzar week)
What did you think of the Trip/s and/or Courses?
The weekend last September was my first taster with Rob and I came away being so much more confident in the sea. I could see over the two days how my abilities had grown and how much better my techniques had improved .....Basically, I was so impressed it's the reason I booked on the week in Lanzer a few months later. This Holiday was simply splendid :) 6 days of surfing and 6 great evenings in Puerto Del Carmen, although I missed the first day of surf through over doing it on the beer, it was an awesome time.
Highlights;
The waves bursting over the sea barrier next the pier in Arrieta and > catching the wedgy cross waves. Also experiencing the power of The Slab when I paddled over and checked the awesome riding by the locals ;)

Dear Rob,
Just writing to say thanks for a fantastic three days of bodyboarding. Aiden is a really great coach, I learnt so much about waves, rips and bodyboarding techniques, it really was a good time with a great teacher.
I am going to try and master my fins next, I traded up from my economy ones to a pair of better fitting Churchil Slashers. I will be back again next year in June and will contact you again nearer the time. Hope you all have a good season, best regards to yourself, Dad and Aiden, Ian R

A great weekend had by both of us. Now I've got some practicing to do.
The hand and arm positioning was the greatest step forward and I was
surprised at how I am able to catch
And ride shallower and smaller waves. Thanks. The duckdive technique is
also coming along.
If you have time could you advise me on some new boards and fins?
I've been riding a hot buttered board for five years and it has done me
pretty well.
With my size (about six/six one and 14 to 14.5 stone), and my current
ability (enough said abou that)
What board would you feel might take me on to the next level? And what
size? I enjoyed trying for drop Knee and will
Be practicing the spinning, so would be interested in something that
allows me to do that.
I live in Bristol but often visit Exeter. Any vendors you would
recommend and types of board?
Also, I get cramps a lot and rubbing with my fins. Jo (super grom) was
sporting a pair of Hydro tech II
Fins with the silicone-like inner. Do you know where I can get my hands
on some?
Hope to see you in September for that course.
Best regards

Hi Rob
Just wanted to drop you an e-mail to say thanks for a great weekend on 22/23 Sept. This is the 2nd time I've been on one of your weekends, but it won't be the last.
I just wanted to share my experience of last Friday (12th October). I got in the water at Rest Bay Porthcawl (first time since the weekend). Its my local break even though its 130 miles from my house. I managed to apply all that Aiden and you had pointed out to me over the coaching weekend.
First off my Manta Blades have had a bit of a trim and are much better now You'd noticed I was struggling with them a bit. Aidan pointed out my position wasn't quite right so I spent most of the session focussing on getting in the right position. My position is now further up the board and hence I'm going so much faster. I even tried a roll and a floater, didn't make the roll and the floater was a bit lame but it's more than I've managed before. Even my cutbacks felt 100% better now I'm going so much faster across the face of the wave.
So to conclude I just wanted to say a big thank you to Aidan and yourself for some invaluable tips and a great weekend.
Hopefully see you next year. |
Watcha Rob,
Guess your back from Indo, any good?
Thanks for a great BB weekend again, don’t now how you manage to hit it right with the surf and weather….genius!!! We had a great time down there, all the lads loved the sponge, even though half of them couldn’t wake up on time or drag themselves off the beach from their drunken slumber!!
We’re all up for doing it again next year, so there’s your early warning!!! Hope your other celebrity spongers will be back too, especially John McRirick, what a diamond!!!! I think there should be a moved called after him!!!
I know Pete took some photo’s but don’t have his email address, is there any chance you could sort us a copy out?
Cheers
All the best for now
Pete |
Hello Rob,
Many thanks for last weekend I really enjoyed it. Please pass my thanks to Aiden, Dave and Lisa for their help and advice, even though I’m at the elementary end of things they all exuded both willingness and enthusiasm and were extremely helpful to me with developing my basic skills. All I need is a bit of practise then I can come back and learn a few moves!!
.jpg)
I’d be grateful if you can keep me up to date with your trips to Lanzarote, they sound great but whether I am able to come I’m not sure at the moment, however if I know what’s happening when then I may be able to respond accordingly if the opportunity crops up.
Warm regards

Hi Rob, Aiden, and all at the bodyboarding house of fun.
Thanks for a fabulous weekend. I thoroughly enjoyed myself, and it felt
as if I made real progress, particularly with hand and body positions
on take-off and in trim, and particularly I had quite a big leap in
confidence. On my way home I checked out Croyde. It was about shoulder
high and sloppy, but still surfable and punchy. I managed a few decent
rides there, and a few duckdives.. all coming on well.
I'll be back at some point in the future, and I have recommended the
courses to a few others. |

I had a terrific weekend and learned loads, certainly will be coming again next year. The three of you were excellent coaches and I was amazed that I could go from never doing it before to catching waves.
Pass my regards and thanks on to the other guys.

What did you think of the weekend:
In a word wooot!
Id been looking forward to the weekend for ages, so to have such perfect conditions was really sweet.
The first session on South Fistral was pretty sick, and we were lucky to be joined by a crew of more experienced boogers. You and Brendan were a total inspiration and Ive come away with so much to improve my riding. There was in-depth tuition on trim position, paddling and timing, all of which was invaluable. By Sunday afternoon, I reckon was 20x better than when I started. I was beginning to really read the waves, and get into the rights spots quicker. Brendan was great on Sunday giving me loads of pointers on how not to slide down the face and get my rail stuck right in; getting my bottom turn in quicker and telling me to relax a bit and not be in so much of a rush. Seeing you guys surf so naturally and drop into the wave so late and with such minimal effort still vexes me, but with practice and a few more trips back to school Im sure Ill get there. Ill be putting everything you taught me into practice over the Autumn and winter. I had my best ever rides this weekend for sure. |

Comments:
I have only been bodyboarding about 5 years, although I wish I'd taken it up years ago, asI really enjoy it. I don't get many opportunities to indulge in what has become my favourite activity, living as I do in the Midlands.
At first, I found it impossible to catch any waves. Then I saw a poster advertising Rob Barber's Bodyboard School, and arranged a lesson. I then attended a Coaching Weekend in September 2006, and again on 20/21st September 2008. Consequently, although I am slow at picking things up, and not anywhere near asfit as I ought to be, I have neverless progressed. I have to say that Rob, Brendanand all the others involved in the School, and in running these weekends, are not only fantastic teachers of the principles and skills of bodyboarding but are really friendly, helpful and patient (with me they need to be patient!) and under their guidance I am making progress, albeit slowly. I intend to participate in more of these weekends and, indeed, am in the process of setting myself certain goals which I intend to achieve. In conclusion I simply say, very many thanks! |

what did you think of the weekend: I found the first day really hard. I didn't think i'd ever manage to get outback on my own. I unlike the rest of the group was quite relieved when it calmed down on the second day and i felt i could start trying out some of the techniques we'd been taught.
